1974년 문화의 중심지였던 서울의 종로에서 시작한 레스토랑 '반쥴'은 당시 한국관광공사에서 개인 업소로서는 최초로 '우수업소 제 1호'로 선정되었으며 국내외 수많은 문화 예술인 및 정재계인사들로부터 많은 사랑을 받았던 유서 깊은 곳입니다. 600여년전 조선시대 초 한양 천도와 함께 계획된 가장 넓은 도로 종로는 육의전 등 시전이 있어 상업의 중심지였으며 가장 혁신적인 문물을 접하려면 사대문 안 종로통으로 향해야 했습니다. 1929년 한국 최초 백화점, 화신상회가 세워졌던 곳, 60년대 대형 레코드점과 음악감상실이 즐비했던 곳, 모든 영화 시사회가 서울 극장에서 오픈 상영되었던 당시 문화의 메카는 종로의 거리에 모여들었습니다.

 

오늘날 2대째 운영해오고 있는 반쥴은 같은 자리에서 2012년 리뉴얼 공사를 통해 복합문화공간으로 거듭나 종로의 정취와 낭만을 지켜오고 있습니다. 커피를 비롯해 40여가지 유기농 차를 맛 볼 수 있는 3층 카페의 한 쪽 벽에는 250여종의 커피 그라인더 컬렉션이 전시되어 있고 4층의 문화공간의 한 벽에는 2,000여개의 스푼 컬렉션이 전시되어 있으며 대관 뿐만이 아니라 기획 전시, 공연, 이벤트와 소규모 웨딩을 할 수 있습니다. 5층의 갤러리에서는 작가의 작업실과 본격적인 전시장 사이를 매게하는 드로잉 및 설치와 실험적 협업의 '드로잉 릴레이 프로젝트'를 매달 진행하고 있으며 또, 테라스 공간에는 도심 속 마천루 경관을 배경으로 하는 아름다운 정원이 있습니다. ART SPACE BANJUL은 앞으로도 아티스트들의 놀이터로서 오는이들마다 복잡한 도심 속의 오아시스와 같은 여유와 예술을 만날 수 있는 공간이 될것입니다.

 

ART SPACE BANJUL

 

Chong-ro had been the largest road for over 600 years since its first development for active business in Hanyang, the capital of Chosun dynasty. It was the center of all businesses that came to sell and trade in ‘Yooguijeon,’ the market place in Hanyang. People had to go through Chong-ro to experience the newest and most innovative products available. And Hanyang remained as the capital city of Korea, now called Seoul, and it is the one of the most popular streets today.

 

In 1960s, many people gathered to Chong-ro street to visit ‘Hwashin-Sanghwae,’ the first Korean established department store, Chong-ro Bookstore, big record shops, music salons with DJ and ‘Seoul Theatre.’ Chong-ro was the center of business and it attracted a lot of people to enjoy art and culture.

 

In 1974, ‘Banjul’ first opened as a restaurant in Chong-ro. It was selected for the first  to be “The Best Restaurant” in the nation by Korea Tourism Organization. Countless number of artists, VIPs from business, public offices and embassy from both within the nation and all around the world had loved this exquisite restaurant for its ellegant culture.

 

Banjul today is an art space with a cafe, since its renewal in 2012. And it is run after generations preserving the reminiscence of romantic Chong-ro it used to be. There is a café on the 3rd floor with forty different kinds of organic tea and other seasonal blendings of beverages including coffee. One side of the wall is decorated with 250 coffee grinders from all over the world. The art space on the 4th floor has about 2,000 sets of spoons from the world displayed on one side of the hall. This space is available for reservations for exhibitions, concerts, events, and small weddings. And the art gallery on the 5th floor opens monthly experimental art exhibitions called ‘Drawing Relay Projects’ to mediate and connect the artist’s home studio to its space of the gallery. And on roof top, there is a beautiful flower garden outdoor surrounded by a skyscraper spread about in Chong-ro. It is a beautiful spot for private parties, wedding events or concerts. ART SPACE BANJUL will provide an oasis-like resting place in the midst of crowded city for the public and a play ground for many artists.
